Going to Nerja for a week next month with 4 mates (23/24 years old).

Now I have been to Nerja several times however I have always stayed in Le Herradura just down the road. I have been both in the day and night so know roughly what to expect but can anyone offer any tips on things to do etc?

I remember there being a kinda square with lots of bars etc, this is likely where we will spend the evenings however just thinking of stuff to do in the day,

Any advice welcome smile

I've also been to Nerja several times but haven't been in a few years so my memory is sketchy.

I remember the Marinas de Nerja hotel by Punta Lara being quite nice and not too dear, it's right on the beach about a 20/30 minute stroll down the beach to the town. Roughly halfway along the beach there used to be a fantastic tapas bar serving a mean paella.

As for trips, theres an water park called Aqua world (I think) near Velez Malaga, IIRC that was about a half hour/45 minute drive from Nerja. Theres a big shopping centre near that too called Euro-something, it's the name of the supermarket there, but there is a nice selection of clothes shops and perfume places inside. If your up for the drive you've got Gilbratar a few hours away, or Malaga not too far from Nerja. (Assuming your flying into Malaga?)

I can't remember Malaga all too well, I know theres a San Miguel factory near the airport which done tours when I was popping over there a few years back. It's a historic city with docks and a bull ring. No idea of anything else there though I'm afraid.

I mainly remember Nerja as a place to see family, and drink a copius amount of beer! biggrin

Marinas de Nerja is 'ok'. Not sure if I'd want to stay there again though (then again, my knowledge is based on my last trip there being 10 years ago).

Second the Paella place though!

I have been to Nerja a lot and love the place but I wouldn't go there for a lads holiday.

Anyway, depending on what you want to do during the day there is still plenty to do.

The beaches have all the usual water/beach sports, I suggest trying the paragliding, usually see a few flying about all the time (google nerja paragliding).
Also some good boat trips and scuba diving to be had.

The Cave of Nerja is worth a visit http://www.thenerjacaves.com/

If you have a hire car definitely get up into the mountains, the roads are incredible and there are countless places to discover. Tip: Don't get a 1 litre stbox, some of the roads are seriously steep.

Not really many bars, more restaurant orientated, the square and Balcon de Europa area is lively at night but search out the backstreet places for food and drink. Lots of hidden gems. Avoid the 'beach restaurants' they are crap.

If you are lucky you will time it right for one of the local Fiestas, my favourite is San Juan. The locals are really into it and it's a fairly hedonistic atmosphere. All takes place on the beach where the locals camp out overnight, lots of food, drink and bonfires.
At midnight legend has it that if the single women folk run into the sea at midnight the first man they see when they exit the sea will be the man they marry, or something like that. Anyway, it means that there are thousands of semi naked drunk hotties flinging themselves into the water in anticipation of Prince Charming being there to help them out. I suggest being there with a large towel will work.

Also, if you haven't already booked accomodation check out the villas for hire in the town. A decent size villa with pool usually works out about the same price as appartments if there are 4-6 people sharing.

Got to echo the fact it's more family than lads holiday.

Thanks so far guys, we aren't after a proper lads holiday like Magaluf or something, just a nice villa with private pool (which we have) and some nice bars for the evening!

I went on a night out to Nerja last year and had an awesome night!

Also heard about the water park in Malaga, worth checking out!

Also seen the San Miguel factory several times, didn't know they did tours though!

If you have a hire car, get yourselves up to the Alhambra Palace in Granada. It's quite spectacular and has incredible views over Granada. Then drive up to the top of the Sierra Nevada for spectacular views. As a bonus, car manufacturers tend to test their prototypes up and down there, certainly later in the year though possibly not in high summer. It's about an hour or so drive from Nerja.

The best mountain roads are further east.

There is of course Ronda which is worth a visit though I've never actually stayed close enough to go myself.

Thought I'd update this thread as I popped over to Nerja the other week.

- The Marinas de Nerja has gone from my original quote "not too dear" to quite bloody expensive in season. I would recommend booking from April - June so you get the weather and a stay at a decent hotel for a good price.

Also, the Hotel Monica is a good shout, this is the big building in the town.

- The beach bar inbetween Marinas de Nerja and the town has had new owners since the time before last I was there, the food is still okay, but the ramshackle feel has gone. The main put off is the prices; they have rocketed there.

There's plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, I will list a couple restaurants which caught my eye though.

Au Petis Paris - I was surprised to see this type of place in Nerja, very good food and wine, very, very expensive!

I can't remember the name of this place I'm afraid, it's a tapas restaurant just around the corner the Pearlas Marinas hotel, on the way to the Hotel Monica. You can get a good variety of food for not a lot of money; a three course meal for two with two beers each cost 23 euros.

All the cocktail bars and clubs are in a square/road called Tutti Frutti, only went in one place so can't comment in-depth. It seemed like good fun with drink deals being advertised by very nice Eastern European girls!

The San Miguel factory I've been informed does still do tours, and the shopping centre by Velez Malaga is known as Euroski - which still has a good variety of shops.
