I'm flying to Spain next week and want to hire a car at the airport for the duration of my stay. I've taken out Excess cover with Insurance4hire. However, all the sites I've looked at say the hire company want an imprint of a credit card to cover the excess. Debit cards don't appear to be acceptable. My problem is, I don't have a credit card.

Anybody know of how I can get over this?

I don't think you can. Apply for a credit card sharpish. Some companies don't have an excess but still require a credit card.

Doesn't the excess cover reimburse you if you have to pay out ?

I wouldn't let cars go without valid credit card details either

I had the same panic when renting in Hungary, luckily in the end the debit card turned out to be fine. If it's a local car hire firm you might be OK. If it's a big corporate chain it may be difficult.

Now seems to be OK, Found a site which got me to a company Car Hire 3000, part of TravelJigsaw. As long as I'm prepaered to pay 5 Euro a day Excess Insurance and I've pre-notified them, I've got an Opel Corsa equivalent for £180 for 2 weeks. The Excess Insurance caps at 60 Euros. I have an e-mail confirming this from Travel Jigsaw along with the Confirmation Voucher. So fingers crossed whistle
