Decent auto five-door hatchback, under 2k?

Hi guys, I have been trying to find a car for the wife to drive that can also double as family transport when required. A Golf or Focus would be ideal, but there seems to be a big premium for auto cars. Autotrader shows several decent looking (less than 100k miles, service history etc) manual Focii for less than £1k. As soon as I select "Auto" in the search, anything worth owning seems to be £2k or over.
I'm not expecting a pristine car, but some I've viewed within budget have been total wrecks! I'm not dead set on a Focus, but I would prefer to avoid strange Korean makes I've never heard of . . . The prices I've seen for shagged out econoboxes are especially galling considering I only paid about £2k for my immaculate 1999 LS400 with 100k miles.
What am I doing wrong chaps, where are all the bargain Focus-sized 5dr autos hiding?

I'm guessing that not many were built, especially at the age you are looking.
You may be better looking at larger 'executives' which were more likely to be auto.
What about a Volvo V40 estate. Not big cars, and estates are often easier to see when parking then hatches also.

You'd probably be best off looking at old boring reliable Japanese stuff - Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Almera etc.
