For less than £100, the Post Office.

Over £100 then Travelex - order them online and collect from the Dover ferry terminal or the Eurotunnel terminal.

Tesco or Change Group

Linked from here, they give the best rate. I've used Change Group before and the money arrived the next day via special delivery, no fuss. It's also best to pay by bank transfer to avoid debit card foreign currency fees.

If one was being uber-picky, while they may give the best rate they also charge for delivery, hence the savings from the good rate are eroded by that.

Travelex gives a good rate and no commission if you collect from a branch, and usually works out best for purchases of more than £100. Post office rate may not be brilliant but there is no delivery / commission.

Swings and roundabouts really - rate vs. commission / delivery.

Only for small amounts. This is PH where we all swan round with £500 in our powerfully built wallets as an absolute minimum.

I had £650 changed up today by post office, equated to just under 700EU at 1.0700.


Not a bad rate I suppose.

Should be on site Thursday. Not sure whether we'll take the scenic route from Cherbourg or blast down the autoroutes yet. Must be pitched before quali starts though!

We have a pawnbroker in Hastings that also does foreign exchange. Managed to get 1.12 euros to the pound last Tuesday, other travel agents were only giving 1.09

ICE PLC are quite good. I got e1.1145 to the £1 yesterday, which is better than anyone on the high street is doing. Yes, they charge £3.95 for next day special delivery, but even so, most high street places are selling at around e1.08 to the £1 so you still save money if buying more than e200 - and most of us will go through more than e200 I should think, when you include fuel, tolls etc.

I am so lazy. Although I have a euro account I always end up at the cash machine taking from my sterling account. Hedged with shares in HSBC I guess

Take a look at moneysaving expert. He has on radio 5 live yesterday discussing just this.
The upshot was that certain types of credit cards were the cheapest way to get euros . Also cheaper via atm

Sorry but that is a complete rip off rate. All bureau du change’s are. I drew 70 EUR from my First Direct account out of an ATM in Belgium on Monday and it hit my account as 62.94 GBP which is 1.112 – roughly the market spot rate.

With modern ATM networks across Europe fully integrated I can’t understand why anyone uses a bureau du change anymore. Just draw cash out at an ATM as and when you need it like you would in the UK. It’s a lot safer than having a long weekends worth of spending money in your wallet all the time as well.

I got mine from M&S last night and the rate was 1.09, which isnt amazing, but by the time you have driven around various places you have spent the you have saved on fuel anyway.
