Never used the stuff before but has been used to provide a base coat on a brick wall

As it's drying it has an over powering smell of rotting eggs, is this normal or what could be causing it?

Yes normal smell. Just drying out.

Hardwall is standard bagged base coat product.

it does have a bit of an unusual smell, but nothing to worry about, just crack the windows open on vent setting overnight for ventilation.

Gypsum - calcium sulphate? - wild guess = H2S (hydrogen sulphide). All schoolboys should know H2S!

Hardwall does seem to smell more, for longer, than browning or bonding. Gawd knows why, but it does stink.
