Bought a 2011 Rockhopper about a fortnight ago, and so far am having a whale of a time on it, both commuting to work, bimbling about on the local cycle tracks with the kids at the weekend as well as hitting the offroad stuff at nearby Haldon.

However, whilst all is so far fine and dandy, I feel it's let down by the pedals, which look and feel as though they're made by Duplo. This I found especially annoying when trying out the offroad trails last weekend when my (admittedly well worn and now smooth bottomed trainers) kept slipping off the pedals at the first sign of a bit of mud and damp.

So, and without breaking the bank (SWMBO has firm control of the key to the piggy bank), what does the floor suggest as an alternative to the standard fittings? Should I just change the pedals, or shout it be pedals, cleats and 'proper' footwear? I've also seen pedals that are 'normal' on one side and clip in on the other. I bow to your collective wisdom. :-)

I have some flip flop pedals (Shimano £40 ish) with SPD on one side and normal pedal on the other. Pretty good, used them for an adventure day (sort of cycle orientering) last year without spds and came back with no smashed shins which I had with my previous set.

V8/V12 Wellgo or DMR good flat pedals, either is on my wishlist for next bike bit purchased but other shiny stuff and holidays seem to be trumping it at the moment.

I did see that, but am imagining having to spend more than £20, as well as imagining that it's not just pedals but possibly footwear also.

Shimano DXs are probably the best flat pedals (quality/cost ratio), if you want clips then M520s and whichever shoe fits your foot and budget!!!

I've got SPDs on my road bike but wouldn't contemplate them for the mountain bike (although plenty swear by them). For that I went for MG-1's (pics on the other thread) and a pair of £15 Vision Streetwear skater shoes from sports direct, a combination which has given outstanding grip even in the murkiest depths of winter.
