Onkyo issue with the PS3???
Discussion
I bought an Onkyo home cinema surround sound system from Richer Sounds a few months back but i have had nothing but trouble when i try to use it with my PS3. The amp is the HT-R380. It is fine when watching the TV or Sky, but when i use the PS3, the screen constantly flashes black and the sound intermittently drops out (not in sync with the screen flashing).
I took the amp back to Richer Sounds and they sent it off to Onkyo's repair people who just swapped out the HDMI port and updated the firmware.
I've swapped out the HDMI cable, tried a different port on the amp, and have also tried a different PS3. The issue still happens!
It's now back at Richer Sounds (probably for another 2 months!) and i have advised them it is just a problem with the PS3 although the assistant didn't really seem to take much notice.
Having looked on the web it would appear that there is an issue with some Onkyo hardware not communicating properly with the PS3.
Has anyone on here had this problem and if so, how did you get it resolved? Did you get it replaced for a different piece of kit or was it just repaired?
Thanks

Having looked into it I reckon your best bet is to scrap the audio through the HDMI and use the digital out instead. Thsi web page suggests you use 2 HDMI cables but as far as I am aware the PS3 doesn't have and audio HDMI out! (scratch that didn't read the article properly). It could also be the sound setting on the PS3 is not compatible with AMP! try changing that too via the PS3 menu.

I get similar with my Denon, when I sleect ps3 it takes ages to finally fix on the signal, every time it tries the sound "thumps" and the screen flashes black then back to blue for the no signal screen.
If I leave it (for up to a minute!) it sorts itself out and is fine after that, does annoy me though!

This is a common problem with PS3s and Onkyos. To fix it...
Turn off Deep colour on the PS3 settings. <-- this fixed it for me
Try switching the HDMI port used on the TV connected to the amp, sounds daft but sometimes it fixes it.
Worst case drop down to 1080i or 720p on your PS3 settings

Unfortunately, it seems to get worse the longer it is on! Trying to watch a film through the PS3 doesn't start off too bad but by halfway through it is unbearable because the screen is just flashing on and off every few seconds! If I leave it (for up to a minute!) it sorts itself out and is fine after that, does annoy me though!
I've changed the audio settings on the PS3 to no avail.
Downscaling to 720p isn't really something i want to do as it would defeat the object of having a 1080p TV.
