Bit of a recurring problem this. About once a year the flow from cold taps and to the toilet cistern on the first floor slows and over a period of days, stops.

Ground floor is fine (mains feed) but something causes the supply upstairs to stop. In the past I've run the garden hose up to the bathroom and blasted water back up the taps which seems to do the trick but I can't tell why. The tank in the loft contains some silt but not a great deal. This is the only cause I can think of.

Ideas?

Air lock possibly. You maybe running water out of the tank faster than it can fill it.

The pipework draws in air and any section of horizontal pipe that is rising can trap air. Usually the first section of pipe coming out of the tank.

By sticking the hose on it, you are forcing the air out of pipe and back in to the tank.

Inspect the run of pipe work for horizontal runs that are rising.

I'd thought of airlocks but did't really pursue it. As it's the bathroom supply that's affected I suppose (hope) it would be easy to find the common feed and check it.

Thanks.
