I picked my esprit up last week after paying a very big repair bill and leaving with over 300bhp (which softend the blow a bit!) and the car was flying!!
A week down the line and its running like s**t again!
Normal off boost driving and the car seems fine, but when I floor it the car only fires on three and just dont want to know.
If I slowly feed the power in by pressing the pedal lightly until full thottle it cougths and splutters a bit but goes a lot better then just flooring it.
I changed the plugs from denso iridiums to a 'recommended' champion plug which has made the problem worse.
But then I checked the gap settings and they where slightly to tight, and that seems to have made it slghtly better, but still s**t.
The H.T leads look a bit worn so I have ordred a new set ( magnercor R-100 racing 10mm).
I have also ordered a set of NGK plugs.

The SE runs 15psi and super unleaded at all times, but as I say it was running awsome when I picked it up and very very fast until this problem accured a week later.
Could it be the leads or plugs???

Any ideas???????????

Could be ignition related. I had a similar problem with a 20v Toyota motor that was solved by adding an MSD6A. After new plugs and wires, think about those coil pack thingies. It is a GM part. I would also check the compression while you have the plugs out.

Kev,

Make sure that with all that 'New' power that you haven't jumped a tooth on the timing belt. Jumping a single tooth won't hurt the head, but will advance/retard the engine timing some 18 degrees and while it will run, it will run as you describe. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Sounds like an HT problem as the prime suspect. I would want to do a compression check, just to reassure myself all was well with pistons/valves though.

Update:-

Changed the leads today, let car get up to to temp.
Was going well, no breaking up pulling strong how it was when I first got it back.

After 10 minutes the problem started again!!
Could it be ACT too high?
I have a inlet temp gauge and on idle is between 23C-26C and on the move is between 18C-20C.

Thats before it passes through the charge cooler.

Any ideas?

Kev,

You are really not going to get to the bottom of your problem until you do some Freescan data logs.

I went through a spell last year with ignition problems. 3 rotors in 3 months. Turned out to be bad batch of Bosch rotors in NZ. Used a Lucas one and no problems since.

The Champion plugs are nasty you will have better luck with NGK. Also check to see that you are not going into overboost and the turbo capsule/wastegate is work or engaging correctly without it working right the fuel pumps will cut out and the engine will sputter after momentarily going on high boost.
