Seem to be getting this occasionally for the last few weeks. It sounds like something mechanical that has failed to engage correctly. Car starts usually second or third time. But it doesn't happen all the time. Could it be an earthing problem\starter motor problem ? Battery is fully charged.

My first guess would be a loose connection.

If the fuel pump primes, maybe the starter has failed to engage or the relays are on their way out?

Shep. Thanks. Something not engaging "sounds" like it. So perhaps a change of the relays might be the first and reasonably cheap starting point. Ok I shall try and get hold of a replacement.

Relay #43 is the starter #53 is the fuel pumps - botton right relay (#43) and the one above it. Try giving them a 'tap' first, it might just be loose
