Has anyone a preference for any particular petrol.
Shell Optimax: Shell V Power ???

Just put some standard 95 RON stuff in from Tesco and car seems to struggle to maintain "idle" and is almost cutting out.

My car has just been service and was OK till I put this stuff in - wont do that again !

95 RON is a no!

97 RON will work ok

98 RON is preferred.

Avoid publicity trade names that 'enhance' standard 97 RON like 'Optimax' and such.

I use BP 'Ultimate' as it is local but would prefer V Power but the nearest to me is a good 6 or 7 miles away.

I would not go within a mile of a supermarket petrol station.

+1 for V Power.

Definately don't use 95 octane - you are risking the engine for the sake of a few quid.

I have run my 450 on Tesco's super for 5 years now. Originally 97 now 99 octane. Never had any problems. The only thing it doesnt like is changing to another brand. I had to put some BP ultimate in a while back as there was nothing else and I was running low. Lumpy and unpleasant.

I think its best to stick to one type , as long as its 97 or higher you should be ok.

Only ever run Daisy & Candy on V-Power (Optimax).

As recommended by John Ravenscroft...so I have and always will.

Daisy complains but deals with it, whereas Candy won't budge and runs awful till she gets her V-Power.

I tend to stick with V-power when I can get it, but it's not always convenient, ie no garages near me stock it. Otherwise, I've used BP ultimate and the superunleaded from Esso, Texaco, Total and Tesco 99, and can't say I've really noticed much of a difference, if any.

Car is supposed to run 98octane, although some do run 95 and don't mention any problems. Best to stick with at least superunleaded, if not the higher rated V-power (or Tesco 99) IMHO.

I find these petrol threads strange, up until my recent engine build I ran pretty much anything including low end RON 95, car always ran great. Now with higher compression I get pre-ignition with lower RON if I accellerate hard at lower RPM but the car stull runs fine.

The cheapest old ste I can find, she never complains smile

Admittedly you notice a bit of an advantage with the V-power stuff, but not enough to warrant the extra cost IMO(unless I'm in a particularly generous mood wink )
