Brakes - bit odd to use - any ideas please?
Discussion
I'd appreciate any ideas on my odd brakes please....
The car has a steering wobble and vicious wobble under braking. So I had the front wheels balanced - they were off, but now okay. But there is still a bit of a wobble - with lots under braking. I should also mention, that the pedal bites a long way down which is a bit unnerving, but had them tested and they work fine.
Tonight, 'we' changed the front brake discs. The steering wobble comes back after about 35-40mph (feels great up to that point!). The wobble now seems more pronounced, almost like the wheels are not completely round.
The brake pedal is rock hard when the car is stationary - almost no travel. But as soon as I am underway, the pedal travels a long way before it bites. If I pump the brakes, they do get tighter, but it doesn't maintain the tension.
The brake fluid was changed and the system bled properly, just two weeks ago.
I read this back and I see I have wrapped two different things together. But they are both a puzzle and I wondered if there could be any link?
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be delighted to hear them. And if anyone is travelling down to Le Mans - best be behind me

. I believe that the suspension tie bar bushes can cause fairly violent vibration under braking, if you have eliminated the discs as a possible cause then I think you should have a look at them next.
In terms of the odd brakes - if you have sufficient "wobble" whilst driving along it is quite possible that the pistons are being forced back into the calliper, therefore giving you a longer brake pedal before any effect is felt.

Hey Nikky
Ah, the cursed wheel wobble. A few obvious things to check would be that the rims are indeed round and that they aren't buckled - spiders are renowned for this. Also, if the car has been laid up for a while then you may have a sticking or seized brake cylinder on one of the callipers. This will cause pronounced wobble on braking, and in general the braking performance will feel poor. I've experienced seized brake pistons on nearly every car I've owned now, so it is quite common and the symptoms are always the same.

I had the same problem, and it was the front drag link bushes, I got some replacement ones from racing green.
It took an hour to replace each side, and my braking is now perfect, before the fix I thought the steering wheel was going vibrate off the column, every time I went near the brake pedal

Yip........drag link bushes. Only £15 each for the poly ones. Take about 20-30 mins a side to change. All you need is a heat source (heat gun or gas), a vice, a hacksaw & a chisel. Hold the centre of the old bush in the vice, apply some heat & get a bit rough with the drag link until the rubber breaks up. Remove the bush centre then carefully hacksaw through the outer sleeve. Remove it by peeling it inward using the chisel. Give everything a good clean up then press in the new poly bush using the vice. Job done.
You would not believe that £30 could make such a difference to your Cerbera!!!

Thank you all very much for your suggestions and advice!! (And for joining in Fubar
) I'm going to work my way through as much as I can tomorrow.
I'll post again with what happens as it's always nice to tie up these 'problem' threads for future reference.

are you venturing to Le Mans?

Is this where someone might post the "what this thread needs is pictures" thingy ???
Cue Mr Cerbera....he's usually keen on piccies.
Well, haven't done this job so a bit short of relevant pics however I never like to dissappoint an audience....Cue Mr Cerbera....he's usually keen on piccies.

Thanks for the piccies JB.
Without looking at my car....I've only seen it from underneath a couple of times.....I'd guess that they were top or bottom arms....it was the phrase drag link that fell on my deaf ears.....would have to look at the car again.
I assumed they were a one piece affair and that bolt hole at the end of the white leg was for another reason, not to join the parts.
Hmn....Paul....forgive me but I can't see any women working at any time on any Cerb in your photo's.
Let alone the topic in question.
So while Fubar might give you 9/10, Amazon might only give you 2/10 for effort.
