Then on the way home on the M6 temp shoots up, I pull over on the hard shoulder loads of gurgling and water lashing out of the overflow. Phoned Ian (Wedg1e) for advice and his first thoughts look right:- head gasket. Funny thing was the oddometer was on exactly 71,000? Managed to struggle on to Tebay services after a refil of water 4 litres
Refilled again and managed to get on the A66 just past Brough. Temp back up to 130 degrees, Pulls it onto a parking area and phones the Breakdown wagon. Much appreciated to a guy from Darlington in a M3 who pulled over to help and charge my phone as it was nearly dead, he also informed me he was a series 1 wedge owner too in gold. What a cracking bloke he was, even gave me his charger incase i needed it wedgers eh! Anyway it looks like it is the head gasket so the BBWF is off for me this year as it will not be fixed in time FFS! All this has happened since i changed the thermostat, probably was about to go anyway but i have my suspicions. So my new policy is if its not broke dont fix it!

Don't look like I will make lads as it looks like I am losing my job in the next couple of months and the wedding next year so I'm afraid the wedge will have to take a back seat. On a brighter note though my mate is a really good mechanic and there is a 100 to 1 runner today at ascot LOL. It's just me being my Mr doom and gloom, I am not going to cancel the room at EC but at the moment it don't look good.

Take the thermostat out and run it up to temp - not out of the question that your new thermostat has failed. At least if it still overheats you can rule out something silly like that - it would be a bugger if you tore it down and found it wasn't the HG.
Yup thats the first test im doing Barky, heres the fingers crossed! Looks like i have a leak from the top hose to the rad or that just could be all the pressure in the system causing it to leak might just need a nip!.Dix

By the way anyone recommend any high temperature paint for the rocker covers?

Hi Mate..TBH..If they are alloy get them cleaned and mirror polished but be careful if having them sandblasted as they need to use a particular size bead..Then H.T Lacquered,If they are mild steel then spend some hours de-greasing and sanding down with wet n Dry or an emry coated sponge which does do a good job..Then as suggested by wedg1e a couple of weeks back..Have them powder coated or chromium plated..I spent 4 hours on my mild steel ones and have had them mirror polished..Im picking them up monday..(hopefully)..and will be H.T Lacquering them myself, I will post them up when done but im not sure if the lacquer is going to react with the polished surface..I hope not..But if they come out the dogs then theres another alternative..Cheers..ZigaDix

Hi
I had similar problem with no 1 after I rebuilt it, problem turned out to be the header tank! The cap and the header tank wear and when the presure builds the cap moves and let's water out the over flow. As the series 1 doesn't have a catch tank it drops it on the floor so total loss!
I fixed it firstly by getting a new proper cap. Later I also changed the tank to a good original!
Now no problem, in fact on Friday going round the M25 in the hot weather the number of modern tin tops on the hard shoulder with there bonnets open was great to see, whilist I was in the unreliable soft top (Top was down) TVR and no problems!!
