Within 3 hours of Edinburgh: roads & forests
Discussion
We've come up to stay in Edinburgh for a long weekend. I hear good things about the open roads out in Scotland and the aim, tomorrow, is to go on a drive.
The criteria are:
: preferably no more than 6 hours round trip
: as little motorway / dual carriageway / busy stuff as possible (preferably none)
: needs to include a nice pub or restaurant
: needs to include some forest scenery (I've got a thing about driving through forest roads - probably comes from years of watching rallies)
Most appreciated if anyone has some knowledge that will help on the above.
Cheers

how about this?
Point A is Newbridge at the west side of Edinburgh, near the airport.
Ok the first and last bit is Motorway, but it should give you a good mix of roads and some tree covered sections, as well as touristy bits like Oban and Loch Lomond. You could go either direction and could also miss some sections out. Google maps gives a reasonably good outline of the forests.
E-F is know as The Dukes Pass and is a fantastic piece of tarmac there is also a forest drive (on forest track, 10mph (or so) limit though!) that leaves from this road.
Other options would be either the Galloway forest park or the Argyle forest park areas. There are also foresty bits in the borders, and depending on what way you are heading south, there is a great run down through the borders and on through Keilder Forest.

That's a well recommended route! Been thinking about doing something very similar soon if we get a dry day!Point A is Newbridge at the west side of Edinburgh, near the airport.

Took the advice and wandered off on this trip, although with getting out of town and back in I was away about 10am-6pm. I did make some stops, including some moderate greenlaning to get a photo of a wee castle on an island.

Had to head off down this disused railway to get the castle shot!
It would be a fair bit quicker to just run up Glencoe and back again, and I took a wee duck round to Crinan which soaked up the best part of an hour.

Just as well I filled up before I left...
