I'm after a suggestion of a first car for a 19yr old, it has to cheap to buy and 'sensible' for insurance purposes.

So far he has looked a '55 plate Ibiza 1.2 but insurance is coming back at £2.5k

Going slightly leftfield he tried a Fabia 1.2 on a W plate but insurance was very similar.

As you can imagine he is getting slightly frustrated!

Have you thought about looking at cars that are not normally associated with young 'uns? Stuff like rep mobiles and so on can be surprisingly cheaper to insure than easily destroyed old French bangers. Less scope for personal injury with passengers etc.

An origional mini is the cheapest thing I can get insurred on (I'm 19 also). So see if they are any better for him.

Insurance is a killer on just about anything. Standard advice would be to look for 'unpopular' young person cars. Loads of young people would like an Ibiza/Polo etc so insurance tends to be higher. Something like a 1.4 Astra might be a better bet on the insurance?

Ka was my first car, almost entirely down to the insurance costs, so you could give that a try?

As mentioned above, best thing to go for is odd choices. Im 21 and i can insure things like s40 2.0d sports for less than my 1.4 bora.... It makes zero sense at all but thats insurance for you!
Cheapest at the moment seem to be elephant, with those its also or me £400 cheaper when i say the car is parked on the street and not in the garage. Once again making zero sense.
Try 1.9tdi polos or even fabia vrs.

Trying the whole 'old mans' car and some are working, some are still silly!

Best so far is an '02 Corrolla 1.4 VVTi for £3k with £1.5k insurance.

He isn't a boy racer but still wants something half decent and reliable.

Do you know if you have a "good" postcode or not? I believe it can have a big effect on insurance.

I'm 19 with no no claims and 3 points and I can get a BMW 330 for under £2k confused

Try some cheap classics. Just remember that safety features are practically non-existent.

Classics are a good way to go if you're interested in them, but not all that reliable! I'm 19 and was quoted £800 to insure my Fulvia and I've had cheaper quotes on other classics.

As for modern cars its a sad fact that if you want one you have to pay the money, try getting quotes from the companies though, the comparison websites are not always the cheapest you can find.

That's extremely good.
The insurance quote for a 1.4 I mean, I have no idea if it's a good price for the car :P

Toyota Aygo. Cheap, hassle-free motoring. Costs peanuts to tax and will do 55-60mpg.

Previous post written by my wife using my account biggrin

She is 19 yes. I'm 21 so still well within the young driver insurance shafting region. We have a 1.8t MG ZT on which insurance is very similar to the 1.6 Vectra we had before - not entirely sure why, all the other ZT models were much more expensive - the 1.8t appears to be the black sheep of the range, perhaps nobody managed to crash them. The MR2s are slightly cheaper than the ZT I believe, though off the top of my head they may have a slightly lower mileage limit.

Did you see the young guy in the paper last week, drives a Tractor!
Got my son a Grande Punto, on the "Coolwall" and cheap insurance.
