My E36 is of the late variety but has one of the non-flashable ECUs (Oct 1995 build). It's only used on track (and driving there and back) and has the battery disconnected for weeks/months between use.

I understand that the ECU and MAF 'learn' very quickly. My car has the M50/BBTB mod, so there's plenty for it to learn as well as the extreme driving the car is subjected to.

My question is: is the extended period without a battery damaging the car's performance because it's busy learning each time it gets connected up again?

Can't see how it's going to "damage" your cars performance.

Chances are if there is any change it will simply revert back to the factories conservative settings and then start to re-learn your style of driving as it goes.

I've disconnected My battery several times and never noticed any real change in performance and I've tried the reset method and not really noticed it making that much difference either (I sometimes wonder if a lot of the difference people say they feel after a reset is a bit of a placebo effect!).

TBH, I think your worrying over something that you needn't be.
