SORN'd, used to work - what now?
Discussion
Got a Nissan Almera GTI sitting on my drive - has been SORN'd for a couple of years, but used to run fine - ~70k miles, slight bodywork attention needed. Great tyres. Rear wheel siezed so not driveable at present.
Problem is, I reckon it'll need £350-400 to get it properly roadworthy again - new brakes and discs (cos of rust -though Icould be mistaken), decent service, MOT, etc. and would then be worth - what - £350-400?
So - scrap it? Webuyanycar it? Ebay? Give away to decent home?
I kind of have an affection for it - it was actually fun to drive, reliable, and so on - so seems a shame to throw it away - but is there any other option? Don't really have the time to break it myself.
Or would it fetch something worthwhile on ebay even if trailer-away only?
anyone been in similar position? (probably not with an Almera, I guess :-))

Similar position. MK2 MR2 sitting on the drive, was originally going to be a fix'er'up project but after only spending two afternoons on it in 6 months, realised I simply don't have the time I need to do it properly (so bought a running one with tax and MOT instead
)
It's currently being used as a glorified shed to keep some wheels in. It'd need a good £400-500 spending on it to get it roadworthy, and that's without unexpected problems; at which point it would probably only be worth 400-500 bob anyway at best. Be a shame to scrap it, but don't want to give it away, and can't sell it. Rock and a hard place!
Current plan is to scrap it as soon as I fit the wheels it's currently holding.

Chances are that the brakes will be ok - The rear wheel is probably a stuck handbrake (assuming you left it on) and can be freed off by driving a bit, or by taking the drum off. If the front discs are rusty a bit of braking will sort them out.
I'd recommend seeing if it'll move a bit, and if it does sending it for an MOT.

Maybe worth while you breaking it for parts.
Until recently, I had a Taxed and MoTed Rover 620ti turbo running which at best, would only make around £600 for the complete runner if I were lucky. Even the AirCon worked.
This is/was the car when I first had it:~

Stripped of many useful parts last month, gearbox, turbocharger, cylinder head ( that Corriered to Romania of all places ), driveshafts, interior etc, etc; I weighed it in for £148 scrap value last week and I kept the alloy wheels it arrived at the breakers wearing :~

Cash for parts so far well exceeds what I could have got for the running car with some tax and MoT and I still have some useful parts such as all four alloy wheels with decent tyres. Also the larger 620ti front calipers which are a popular brake upgrade and other useful bits available ...
Some of those parts now live on in other 620ti in my family as well as friends' and others' cars which is a bonus. The complete exhaust system and CAT now lives on on my son's 182,000 mile 620ti which needed new exhaust for MoT ... passed no issues at all. It's his daliy drive workhorse.
It is now a sad fact that many older but still good cars are worth far more as parts and scrap value. A few years ago, any old cars were frequently seen left at roadsides rather than have to pay to have them taken away. You do not see that now and for good reason.
It also explains why so many tidy but still relatively young cars, up to say ten years, when taken in part exchange by the local Arthur Daley used car lots, are sent round to the Car Breakers and weighed in rather than seen as nice little earners on their used car lot. Some of the better stuff turning up in my local yards is surprising. Then again, maybe not so in the current UK 'must have new' throwaway environment.
