Why do these idiots do it?

Some AutoTrader advert said:
ABC car 111000miles £500
So I click on the link...

The link in the advert said:
111,000 miles, 4 Door Saloon, Black, Diesel, Automatic, ...
...and LONG MOT & TAX. Real price is £3500 and is negotiable! £500 Negotiable. No Time wasters!
So it's not bloody £500 then, is it.
They're everywhere! I'm after a sub-£1k snotter, not a few thousand.

Do they honestly think by getting their advert coming up in sub-£1000 searches, I'm going to click and think: "well, I was going to spend £500 but it seems a real bargain at only £3500, so I'll stretch myself"?

And then they have the audacity to add "no time wasters". What? Like in the same way they're wasting my time having to click on link to discover it's not what I thought it was.

Muppets.

Yes, not enough/any swearing, etc. As you were.

Pisses me off too.

All to save a couple of quid on the price of the advert, and get your car first in the search listings, which would be more important for the seller.

I hadn't considered the savings on the listing costs. Autotrader really ought to have a "report" button for this type of thing.

It makes you think if the seller doesn't even want to spend a few extra quid on the advert then the same probably applies to their philosophy on maintaining the car.

Good point. I didn't notice that this time around (as a snotter, the mileage doesn't really concern me) but equally annoying.

I like the trade ones that are obvious mistakes. £999 and when you open the advert it's £9990 or something like that. I would turn up with £999 and a member of the Trading Standards office if I could be arsed. wink

+1

It is really annoying with adverts like this, you can just tell the seller is a complete tt.

But errors and omissions on adverts are not legally binding.

They are an "invite to treat" not a contract. The contract is formed once the deal is done.

Which is why shops don't have to sell you goods when there is a discrepancy between the label and the price charged.

If they're going to con you into looking at their ad, you can be sure they'll try & con you about other things as welllaugh

Wouldn't get you anywhere, as the legislation allows for 'obvious mistakes'.

i replied to their twitter feed about that, they said to complain vi some link but it's rather hard, they should have a report ad button on each add, but i'm guessing they see it as it would create additional work as people would probably abuse it (ie other car places with similar cars)

Auto trader does state when you place an ad that misrepresents the sale price etc it will be removed, but I guess with a price jump for advertising of £25 for vehicles under and over £1k just for 2 weeks on their website I can understand why some people do it.

Phone him up and offer £500 for it, if he says no then tell him to stop wasting your time.

If you want to find the end of your bell, ask for some better/different/specific photo's to be sent to your email and use the reply address to register to dating websites and compare meerkats so they get spammed to the point of insanity. wink

Yep, was gonna post similar. If I had nothing better to do, I'd be on a one-man mission to clean up Autotrader!
Me: Wow, a Ferrari F430 for £500?
Idiot: It's the daily ren...
Me: You sure it isn't nicked?
Idiot: It's the daily ren...
Me: Do you have the V5?
Idiot: It's the daily ren...
Me: Can I take it for a test drive?
Idiot: IT'S THE DAILY RENTAL PRICE.
