Where would one get a metal slab?
Discussion
I'm thinking of building a barbecue. Ideally, this will be a gargantuan beastie on an old shed base, which will also have a pizza oven and smoker built in.
The main challenge in my mind at the moment is where I put the charcoal. Ideally, I'd like to get one of those slabs of metal you used to see covering road works before they started using plastic things instead.
Does anyone know where I could find one, or even exactly what I should call what I'm looking for?

If you Google "[your town] steel stockholder" it'll come up with a list of places. Phone them up with the dimensions and they'll tell you if they can help.
I suppose you could also try scrapyards (of the metal recycling rather than car dismantling variety), but unless you find someone particularly helpful you may need to visit them to see what they've got.

or the local scrap yard, I'm sure its the sort of thing that get's weighed in all the time by your friendly neighbourhood recyclers...
It'll provide you with a good excuse to buy one of these if you don't have one already.

He is going to need a full road plate for all the snags if we're all coming for the grand first cook off..
On a serious note, you may not need something as thick as road plate, it'll take forever to heat up... You may just need something thinner like 10mm plate, which is still a substantial chunk of steel.

I wasn't thinking to cook on it, so much as use it for the bed for the charcoal, but now you come to mention it....On a serious note, you may not need something as thick as road plate, it'll take forever to heat up... Either way, thickness was going to be another question. I would imagine 10mm will be more than adequate?
