Just wondering if when selling cars does any one ask about insurance. Reason being i was selling a Fiesta a few moons back and had a chap who viewed the car then wanted his Farther for a 2nd opinion, no problem until i asked if they had insurance, the Father said "no, but if i don't drive it i won't buy it", that's fair enough i thought don't buy it then.

I sold the car onto someone else but wondered if i should of handled it better.

The car was a Fiesta, and very clean example and at a fair price so i know it would sell.

Do you ask to see insurance documents, or do you make sure your insurance covers any 3rd party driver.

I think you done the right thing, can't really take the chance these days.

If they happen to bring their certficate which confirms they can drive another car 3rd party, great, if not, they're not driving my car!

Only exception I would make I suppose would be if it was a quiet area, quick spin round the block if it was for someone I knew or knew through friends/family perhaps. Even then theres still the risk involved.

Surely if it's 3rd party, you're still screwed if they crash it.

You can also be in trouble with BiB if you knowingly allow someone to drive uninsured.

Although not 'morally' correct I think this is the risk you take when selling privately in order to get more than you would px'ing. I suppose you could get a buyer with 3rd party insurance to sign an contract where they agree to pay full asking price if they crash but, but getting the money would be another issue.

yes

I meant the risk regarding the law in the sense BiB could do you for allowing an uninsured driver to drive the car.

I always let people test drive if they ask. Yes, if they crash you're screwed but what are the chances? The only time I wasn't keen was when a Renault 5 driver turned up to look at my V8 Rover. In the end I didn't have to worry because after I drove and gave it some welly he went a bit green and decided not to buy.
Also, I would never buy a car I didn't test drive. I fell for that once, and once only is all it will ever be. I never had a private seller refuse, but then I always ask before I go if they will let me.

I asked the guy I bought it from to take me in a ride in it. No insurance for other cars and I wasn't familiar with the area.
