Best coating product for rough sawn cladding?
Discussion
Can anyone recommend a good woodstain / satin paint finish for wooden cladding pre-treated with Cuprinol black preservative?
After two years our 'barn' is starting to look shabby and the neighbours' even worse after 4. We're looking for something that requires only one coat a will last for 5+ years.
It's a big decision and we want to do the job right!
I had a barn conversion for a number of years, and used to use Solignum Architectural Opaque Woodstain.
It really penetrated and seemed to solidify the wood to a certain extent (felt solid if tapped).
I used the ebony colour and it was perfect for the setting.
First time I did it I needed two coats for depth of colour (was overcoating brown,) but for subsequent maintenance every 4 or 5 years, one coat was all I needed.
Resisted UV brilliantly - the south facing side was always as good as the north facing side.
Last time I did it was about 8 years ago, so I'm not sure if they have reformulated it due to modern environmental concerns - it was pretty loaded with VOCs if I remember correctly!

Whatever you use other than more black cuprinol, you'll probably want to contact the manufacturer to check compatibility.
That's a good point. When some exterior cladding on my house started looking pale after a few years I painted it with stain which obviously disagreed with the incumbent - it started flaking and looking very patchy. Eventually I covered it with cedar shingles; a vast improvement.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
