Notice the cones and the armco already flattened exactly where the jag hits it? Must've been a diesel spill or poor surface.

Looks like someone had done it before him - the crash barrier was already smashed up

NO chance at all, that is purely POOR driving, not understanding that braking/steering like that mid corner is not clever nor was the attempt at trying to catch the tail when it first wagged.

Probably one of the many owners of RWD cars who don't even know it' RWD

In fairness, the accident wasn't contributed to greatly by the fact the car was RWD - decelerating mid corner is a simple weight transfer issue and would affect all cars similarly, although granted, if the car is RWD (I couldn't make out whether it was a RWD model or not actually..), it will have slightly more mass at the back than a front driver (mainly the rear diff). To my eyes, the accident was caused by a vast over-reaction on the steering to a small and rather gentle onset into neutrality (i.e. the smallest of twitches was met with loads of opposite lock), exacerbated by sharp braking in the transitional phase between lat g one way and the other. The initial problem though was just loads of unecessary opposite lock - this guy needs to sort out his steering technique!

It's an early S-Type so yes, definitely RWD.

Nothing wrong with the cars handling - purely driver error.

Rubbish. It's nothing to do with being RWD as the initial tailwag is obviously caused by lifting off as the corner tightened, not by excess power and FWD cars are just as likely to suffer from sudden lift-off oversteer. As the jaguar driver is evidently not the first person to go off recently at exactly the same point, some blame must be attributed to road surface and/or design even though he over-reacted once into the slide.

The right hand rear tyre appears to be smoking all the way from where the Jag enters the shot, still going in a straight line (well before the corner tightens), not braking etc.

Thanks.

yes All he needed to do was steer where he wanted to go, so as the car became neutral, keep the wheel pointed in the direction of travel. If he'd done that, this wouldn't have even been memorable, just one of many steering inputs one often needs to make when driving that fast. This is why fixed input steering at quarter to three is such a good idea; you know exactly where the front wheels are pointing and your LH vertical input is balanced with the RH vertical input, making moments like this just disappear completely. The braking was purely his reaction to scaring himself, so wouldn't have happened if he'd sorted his steering out.

I didn't expect the car to roll that much though after the impact - hope he/she was ok! Looked nasty.

It's a shame this is (probably) the most famous S-Type cornering video, as they are actually very good handling cars.

Apprently Pizzonia used his F1 car braking point going into the turn....

Reminds me of the very first thing we were taught at the skid training day at Castle Coombe:

Tutor ask "what causes a skid"?

Various answers from the group....

"Ice?"
"Poor tyres?"
"excess speed?"
"Wet roads?"
"Leaves?"

Tutor replies. "Nope. Only 1 thing causes a skid. The driver."

In this instance, although another car appears to have gone off before the Jaguar, there are far many more cars that didn't crash on exactly the same bit of road.

The road is wet, it's spray.
