We're looking at getting a carpet cleaner / shampoo'er for cleaning our household carpets, but also for cleaning car seats, so it must have a good upholstery tool as well. Budget is £100 to £150, but don't mind secondhand or graded stuff from Ebay.

Anyone got any recommendations?

For that money I really wouldn't bother tbh. The cheap ones usually leave the carpets quite damp and don't really do a good job of cleaning them either. Did it once and never again. I usually get a pro in once a year to do ours now.

Now and then Bissels come up on special offer for £100 or £150 quid, I think mine came from Makro. It's been superb, the colour of the water it drags back up is testament to it's effectiveness IMO, and it's saved my arse a couple of times (red wine on cream coloured carpets for one).

tiny weeny hi-jack sorry... if the budget was a little bigger what would be recommended?

I saw some pros do a frankly filthy office carpet (food, drink etc all over the bloody thing) and it came up like new, wasnt a vacuum type affair like the bissels though, just a big swooshy round scrubby thing... they might have followed it up with a vacuum though... I got kicked out as they wanted to do my corner of the room.

I borrow my sisters Vax machine once a year. Its big, round and orange. As mentioned earlier, the colour of the water after washing is testament to how effective it is.

I've just bought one of these. Very pleased with the results.
