A mate asked me this today. he has a 1992 Peugeot 205 with almost 300K on the clock.

he wants to replace it with something with the same engine and I could only think about the Peugeot 309 and Citroen ZX...

What other cars used the same 1.9 none turbo Diesel engine?

I stand to be shot down in flames but, the old XUD enigne you speak of was used on all Peugeot/Citroen diesels until the late ninties when they were replaced with the HDI. My '98 306 had a non-turbo XUD. Very agricultural and not in the slighest bit refined but it never went wrong in the 65,000 miles I put on it. Shame I cant say that about the rest of the car!

I think the 205 is the 1.8 version of that particular engine, there was also a 1.7 that went in the BX.

other notable XU applications include the rover 200/400, and an FSO pick up (the engine was the best part I am sure)

it also went in the 405, Berlingo, various commercials, and i think (not sure) Suzuki used it in something.

I have had 2 XU engined 306's, one turbo one not, I think for its day it was a cracking engine. MUCH more refined than the ford / vauxhall (Izuzu) / renault alternatives. Also with a bosch pump will run on 100% veg oil. Very reliable, its laughable how poor modern diesels last compared with tank engines like the old XUD

I have that engine in my 2004 Peugeot Expert van, one of the main reasons I got it. As stated, a bit of a rough old engine but it should go on forever.

I think i`ve seen it in a toyota of the 90s because the japs didn`t realy do diesels back then. Good engine i had a peugeot partner van with it in , would never win any races but was still going strong at 175000 miles when i sold it.

Early nineties Rover 200/400, I think.

Later 200/MGZR used the turbo version.

I think all the Mg models used the rover L series engine (another quality old school diesel engine imho)

Is it not the same as the one in the 306, 406, BX, ZX, etc etc??

Most are turbo, but the same basic engine, I know there were 306 non-turbo's out there?!

Me too - wait, I did! Tarmac shredding 92bhp, yipekiyay.
There was a guy on here who could give it 300bhp+ by "fitting a bosch"....

Mind you he didn't last long....

The 309 immediately came to my mind. Getting hold of a replacement engine will probably be a struggle for him.

ni on any TD pug or stroen up to the late 90's will have one, LDV 200 in RWD but non turbo 400s used the larger 2.2 to 2.5, rover 200 or 400 up till 96ish ?
the 205 had the 1.8 but the 1.9 is ni-on identical.
