Hey guys,

Can someone offer some help?

I'm looking to purchase a good espresso machine (and decent coffee grinder) for the new gaff as I have a half decent budget and more importantly finally have some space to accommodate one.

Do you have any recommendations as I know sod all about them.

Look forward to any help

Love my Europiccola, but it's a bit of a faff. If you want something special for weekends or want to 'learn' coffee and the art of making espresso, then they're great. If you want to knock out a shot or two while getting ready for work on a morning...avoid.

As with a car our budget as as important as our requirements-
decent starts at about a grand and the sk is the limit
requirements more espresso or also steaming for lots of milk?
As with a car the right dealer is important because ou will inevetable need servicing sooner or later (as with a car being mechanicall minded helps)
For a starting budget
La Scala Butterfly plus demoka grinder
For inbetween
la nuova era cruda (or ECM Milano) or perhaps a Elektrra Mcrocasa if design is important to ou, with a mazzer mini grinder
Try a Roadster from Kees van den Westen for a unlimited budget
All better than the europiccola - there are of course the usual simple versions (Nespresso better than Automatic ones imo)

For a dealer if ou are in the south Qualitasse in basingstoke (the internet is our friend) offer good service an advice

It has to be a manual, just like cars

Cheers,

I'm in Glasgow, and know of a few contacts for servicing of the machines through friends in the restaurant trade so will try to pull some strings and see what we can get thrown in to the mix.

It wont be for every day use, more occasional / weekends

Gaggia Classic - approx £250

Perfect espresso with the Perfetta Espresso device.

You can get Gaggia Classics cheaply (£167 shipped) here: http://www.fastshopping.eu/en/magazzino/dettaglio/...

I've never used them and the site looks dodgy, but a guy I know on another forum has bought a couple without problems, same day shipping, DHL tracking # supplied etc.

Whats your budget? I own a gourmet coffee roasting company and can give you some good advice!

My comapny www.greenbeanroasters.com

Take a look at the "Rocket" espresso machine - if you've got the dosh they're great! Metal groups and inards - not plastic - better extraction and proper steam pressure - Ideal for any home but are actually designed and are well up to light commercial use - small bars etc...

I dont sell 'em - so no affiliation but know them and think they're the biz....

Have had a Jura F70 for the last 7 years and has been bloody fantastic with great after sales service too!!

As long as it is capable of a reasonable pressure then it is down to the quality of the beans and the grind!

Looks like this ..

But OP wants a manual

I'm seriously contemplating the Isomac Tea II as my next purchase. Beautiful thing:

You are dead right about the Rancilio, as a cheaper option to the Isomac it is peerless, although the lack of same-time steaming and espresso making would irritate me slightly - plus it's not the most attractive box to look at.

Yes. More budget definitely means one can get a better machine (double boiler, etc) and even a better grinder. A rotary vein pump machine would be really nice too. An inlaw of mine just got a new Silvia and it's quality has really improved in the last 10 years.

Isomac are imo form over function and finish as often not as good as the price would make you expect (La scala a lot better in this price bracket), Rancillo is great if one does not want a E61 clone and can do without the permanent steam option
