Hey there, the following happened in this order of events.

1. Took a blood test and ultra sound test to diagnose my liver (nothing expected, just to be on the safe side)

2. 5 days later I started a new job and listed any medical ailments that I had.

3. 4 weeks later, the results from the blood test and ultra-sound show my liver is fine, however its now become apparent that I have three kidneys and will need a handful of days off work for tests.

How do I go about telling HR about my new problem? I dont want to scare the hell out of them, thinking I'll need lots of time off work or I'm about to drop dead.

On the other hand I'm worried they won't like the fact that I didn't tell them I'm waiting on blood tests. That said, its not every day you expect to be told you have three kidneys.

Extra kidney?

Get a free iPad like that Chinese kid!

Seriously though, You didn't lie at the interview, so they can't really do anything about it. Be upfront with them now though, there's no point hiding any of it, apart from the blood test just before the interview maybe.

OP, if you don't want it, can me and Dave split it? (Not literally)

I'd quite like a shiny new ipad.

Just tell your employer the situation, at the end of the day, you're going to need the time off. There's no point beating around the bush.

I think I have three options.

1) Just take annual leave for hospital appointments.

2) Tell them I have just found out about my problem, and that I will need time off in the very near future (they may ask why I didnt tell them I was waiting on scan results, what do I say to this?!)

3) Tell them I have a hospital appointment when the time comes. This would leave them shocked at suddenly realising I have a medical ailment thats not in my personal folder. (bad idea I think).

I think honesty at the very beginning is the best policy.

Just say you got the test results and all was fine.

However, further analysis has revealed the new problem since starting the job.

It was a month after you started the job that you were told about this. Just say that following routine checks some anomaly was found, and that you will need to take some time off in the future to have an op. DO NOT offer to take this time off as annual leave, as some employers will bite your hand off.

Basically, explain it as you have above. It's truthful, and at no point were you required to declare any tests; you would have been asked 'do you have any health conditions?', or words to that effect.
