We're looking at getting some fitted wardrobes to tidy up the horrible old ikea cabinets in the alcoves either side of our chimney breast. Its come in at about £1k.

Seems alot of what is basically 2 doors, a frame and a shelf. I wondered about chucking something together myself. Fitting a frame, hinging up some doors and adding some shaker panels to the doors. I can't see costs getting to much and its not advanced woodwork.

Am I being silly thinking about building them myself?

Are they just fronts and doors or full new carcases?

What kind of wood? Are they being made and fitted by a joiner or is it purchased items and a fitter?

For made and fitted fronts only in a nice finsihed timber it sounds about right but expect a proper job.
