DIY Fault Code Reader: How?

Still not having the proble I posted earlier, I want to try a fault code reader. Cannot find one (in the Netherlands) that could cope with the Ford 2.9 engine and has the right connector.
I've read you can make one using a LED and a resistor, can't find it anymore.
Does someone know how to make and connect one?

I have a Ford 'Star' tester designed specifically for the 2.9 cologne which you are welcome to borrow if you dont minf covering the postage and a bit of insurance each way.

I made a simple one with an LED and switch in a small plastic case - it cost less than £3.00 and works a treat on other cars I've tried - but not on my car because the diagnostic socket doesn't work!

I can't remember how I worked out how to make it - I found a web site that showed how to extract fault codes using a test lamp and a piece of wire, and worked out a wiring diagram from that.

As we speak my father in law is making one of these from this website, all instructions are there but you do need to buy the "chip" direct from him, as far as I know he is almost done, I have even moved my diagnostic port in readiness for it's arrival, I will post how I get on.
