Help with car options....
Discussion
Hi all - bit of input required - my old man is wanting a new car and as much as I have mentioned a few options nothing seems to stick - (he is adamant that he want's a new(ish) plate - my argument is that for the same money he could have something with a little more prestige.
He wants to spend about £16k - for that money he has been looking at new Meganes, the new Focus, Volvo C30 - all which have been on 2010 / 2011 plates - the Focus will be poverty spec at this price though with it being so new. The megane has toys such as bluetooth, auto wipers, parking aids etc which he likes.
The requirements are - boot large enough for fishing tackle, faily economical (2.0l max) and petrol. Also he like the lighter interiors - e.g blue with cream leather etc.
I have been suggesting staying clear of a new plate as for the sake of it he could have something a bit more upmarket which is 2-3yrs older, perhaps still just in warranty and already taken it's first hit on depreciation. Was thinking BMW, Audi, Saab - even convertible versions of the A4 and Saab would probably be ok. Any other ideas people?
Thanks!

For that kind of money I'd be looking in the direction of a few year old Honda Civic Type-R.

Thinking about my own Dad, that is probably completely the opposite of what he would want. High emmisions, noisy, stiff riding. This looks like a cracker

Why not just book a test drive in something like this. Don't tell them what the car is, just take them, this way they'll drive it with less preconceptions and see what they can get for their money. He wants to spend about £16k - for that money he has been looking at new Meganes, the new Focus, Volvo C30 - all which have been on 2010 / 2011 plates - the Focus will be poverty spec at this price though with it being so new. Certainly a much more comfy and pleasant place to sit than a Focus. Also probably better performance, more refined, quieter and better mpg too. Classy badge and image too.
Yes the X-Type is a very nice smoker. Get himself a £400 plate from
http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/
or
http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/
and the job's a goodun.
For example V 20 DSG is £405 including all taxes, etc.

@ 300BHP/ton - the X Type is a very interesting point! I didn't realise that they were so well equipped. The leather looks fantastic too. They are based on the Mondeo too so they handle well and are cheap to maintain. Great input thanks!
Personally I feel the X-Type is a highly underated car. Very interesting history in its development too.Yes the base platform is Mondeo, buts that's about as far as it goes. All the switch gear is what you'd find in the XJ8 (X308/X358).
Very capable cars, great handling and supremely comfy and well put together.
