I've always used Payne sets, but I've never had to use one for a V8 (touch wood)

Another Vote for Paynes...top stuff

Dix before you strip down, have you had the coolant checked for hydrocarbons? This would confirm that the there is problem with head gasket/porous/cracked head, saves a lot of time and money if there is no need for a strip down.

Just to complicate life Payen do steel and composite head gaskets,old things like mine are quite happy with a composite set but if your going to Santa Pod with it you may prefer a steel set. CG915 fits the 30A series engine.smile

I always use 10 bolt Elring ones, and just leave the bolts on edge off, as they can cause problems.

The heads have three rows of bolts clamping them down: two rows are under the rocker cover and the third set (at the exhaust side) are exposed. Some (race-tuned) engines have been known to have sealing problems caused by the additional clamping loads of the outer row of bolts so some builders prefer to leave them out. On a standard-tune engine it's probably not a problem (I rebuilt my 390 engine in 2001, I guess that would have been regarded as a 'tuned' engine in its day wink) and ten years later I haven't noticed any problems in normal road use. I bet more RV8s have them fitted than not.

All the later heads did not have the outer row, as it was a known problem of causing uneven loads.

The decision should be steel or composite head gaskets.

V8 developments supply top kit !

As said I'll only use Elring Composites, bit more expensive than some but worth it, esp as you are not going to want to have to redo them.

Steel being thinner give a higher C/r and more power (a bit)

and composite give better sealing abilities.

Dix, composite H/G on mine, just be aware that due to the thicker material;
1)You will lower the compression ratio by upto .7 (ideal for Supercharging)
2) Hydraulic lifters will need shimming.

Of course you may already have composites fitted... I used them on my rebuild in 2001, still working fine! Took the 390 up and down our private driveway a few times tonight to annoy the neighbours...er, I mean make sure that the brakes worked etc. whistle in advance of Saturday's MOT...
