Had that yesterday here. Not that unusual to have hail.

If you get clouds going high up 'cos of thermals, then hailstones are possible.

Had this in Basingstoke this afternoon... set some car alarms off in the car park!

Snow is due to low temperatures near the ground, hail's due to the rain circulating high up in a thermal. The hailstones can go up and down a few times growing in size as they go (iirc).
