Upgrading to 185mm Rotors...

Very quick one, my mate gave me a 185mm rotor for my Avid Juicy 3's with a rear adaptor (His bike came with it and he upgraded straight away to a 203mm to match the front).

I want to put it on the front though so I'm guessing the rear adaptor is useless to me until I buy another 185mm rotor.

Question is... what adaptor do I need (or what is the difference between...)

The latter one looks identical to the rear adaptor I have!?

It depends on if your forks have post or IS mounts.

Yes.

Get a front one.

Do you really want a 185mm disc on the rear. Most braking is done with the front I would have thought, although please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi mate,

No I want it for the front!

My friend bought a Trek Scrath, it had a 203mm rotor on the front and a 185mm rotor on the rear. He took the 185mm rotor straight off with the adaptor and put on a 203mm rotor and adaptor to match the front.

I'm not really that bothered about upgrading my brakes yet... I can't see that I'm going to need anymore stopping power than I already have (once they're bedded in!) for what I'm going to use it for but as he gave me the rotor and adaptor I'd like to put it on the front (hence the need for a front adaptor) and then I may get a 185mm rotor for the back as I have the adaptor for that!

Not sure if it's worth it but hey!

Off topic a bit but first time I went to the alps I had 8" hayes HFX 9's front and rear on my glory and a mate had a Giant DH team with 8" on the front and 6" on the back...and he boiled his rear brake every day at some point whereas I never had a problem.

a big rear disc can be very useful sometimes, although I'll grant you in the UK it can be overkill, and obviously you loose an element of modulation.

Yep he is right when doing big steep dh runs in the alps / whistlerbthe back brake gets used more.
