unidentified S3 electrical bit

Now here's something I haven't seen before but I'm sure I'm the only one!
My S3 doesn't have a radio fitted, just a blanking panel. In looking to see what type of connector there was to match to a radio, I pulled out a fist full of wires which turned out to be some sort of radio adapter loom (home made) but close behind that and blocking the space where a radio should go was this cylindrical electrical bit - half chrome, half plastic shown here in the foreground. It's a Lucas part but otherwise I can't see any other identifying marks.
Going into the chrome end is a red/white and a black wire going back to a 2 pin connector with 2 wires per pin - blue/red and red on one side, black on the other. Coming out of the plastic end are 3 black wires which lead to what looks like plastic switch surrounds but which were just loose in the space. The plastic body has a mounting flange with 2 holes in it.
On the face of it it doesn't seem to do anything but as far as I know, all the electrics work fine (door mirrors are manual).
Any idea what it is and what I should be checking that might not be working correctly?
