Question on Insuring someone elses car

I have a friend who works out the country. With his permission of course, I'm going to insure his car on a new policy I'll take out so I can use it occasionally. His insurance company want a fortune to add me. I have a second accrual of NCB I'm not using at the moment, so looks like it'll be cheap enough.

Is it legal for me to take out a seperate policy on his car? I will of course declare he is the owner.
