If my Z4MC has averaged 21mpg over 4 years what should I expect from the V8 M3?

That's not too bad then. I am getting 22 from my Z4MC and the demo M3 had 13.9 on the computer - just scared me a little!

a demo car is always going to be low as it gets thrashed every day, in the real world you do spend a lot of time on the motorway, I put my foot down a lot and still avg 21

Yes echo this - my car is driven enthusiastically when it is possible to do so, and also has a reasonable share of city driving, but then motorways even it all out.

my dad is averaging about 19 over 30k miles. he re-set it the other day just as he got to the motorway to see what he'd average. he got 11.5 at the other end rofl

Around town 17-19 and on a regular 320 mile journey I do (only occasionally in the M though that'd cost too much lol) I can just hit 24 mpg, that's a mix of dual carriageway and B road.

Appreciate the feedback thank you.

If I average 20mpg I'll be happy if it drops to the 16 mark I will have to adapt my driving style a little.

Good news, not too offensive on the consumption then!

My new M3 coming in a week or two, also moving up from a Z4MC.

Never get much more than about 19 average, but I do spend time around London...

I do little city driving and returned 23 mpg over 10k in my manual car.these readings ere taken off the computer rather than fuel pump readings
Interestingly my current m3 with stop start is about the same.

I get about 16 mpg based on 90% town / 10% motorway driving

I'm averaging 18-19, sometimes see 22-24 if it's wet and I'm on the motorway. Sometimes 15ish if it's dry and I'm on good roads.

I've seen under 10mpg too but not often.

For me it's the tyre wear that's the issue with running costs, I'm getting 5k miles from rears, which seems silly. That's on Cups btw.

Just past 19k miles from new and it's due its fourth set of rears and second set of fronts. I really can't put off the replacement much longer either, I went out earlier in the rain and it didn't feel great.

That's £4k plus on tyres in two years.

It sounds nice though.

I'm actually right at the point of deciding to let it go, I've got used to it so it doesn't feel all that fast any more.

23-24 measured at fills, since I acquired one about 2 weeks ago.

My commute is mostly 60 and 50 limits, which I tend to follow, which explains the better fuel consumption.

If you don't mind me asking, was the M3 the first car you considered for commuting?

There seems to be an implied rebuke in your post.
No implied rebuke at all, more an apology for posting fuel consumption figures which may make it appear that I am driving like a granny.

In short, it a near impulsive buy and I wanted a NA V8 before Euro regs made everything turbocharged. Longer story below.

M3 is the car I have wanted ever since shortly after I saw it in the wild. It took a little while for the looks to grown on me.
I had a Z4 2.2 before (smaller engine due to insurance, passed my test about 2.5 years ago). I had been looking at a change so that I could get a little more power and possible +2 seats so that I don't have to drive the wife's car every time we needed a space for a third person even if it was only a short bit of the trip. Move to an auto with paddles was also appreciated as I do 1600-2000 miles per month.

I had spent months agonising over the choices available to me - and was lost. Ones considered were LPG converted 3-series, 335i, 6-series with or without LPG, 335d, even M5/6 with the option of LPG, RS4, S5, etc.

Went away for a weekend with the wife, on the way back, I suggested we stop by the BMW dealers so she could have a look at the M3 interior. The WAF (wife acceptance factor) was fairly high due to the practicality. Fuel a little worrying. Went for the test drive and she goes 'why don't you buy it?'

Sat down and did a little 'man maths' and traded in my old car, intending to keep it till it dies.

The true cost of it will not be evident till next year. I love the new car. It still stings when I have to top it up with fuel so regularly. Not really happy with the range on a full tank, but it is an acceptable compromise.

It is also a hell of a lot more comfortable than a Z4 on run-flats.

Sorry for the rambling reply.

Not quick enough with the delete, sorry. I do take it back.

I hope you enjoy it. I bet your fuel consumption figures might start to tumble a bit though.

I'm finding it really hard to justify hanging on to mine as I rarely use it. However each time I do drive it the decision's deferred for a bit.

Have fun and sorry for the pissy post.

Just over 20 from mine- and fairly consistent. Absolutely hammering it brings it down to 14-16 with long motorway runs 25-27.
