water boost???

Hi all, had an interesting conversation with a friend today, he reckons he met someone running a car on water!

Now he's not a stupid guy, and neither am I, so I treated this reckless claim with its deserved scepticism, but I was obviously intrigued, I wanted to know everything, just so I could point out it was an obvious joke of some sort.

Apparently this guy (who is a distant relative of my friend) has had his jag v6 converted by a company called "water boost hydrogen fuel systems" and its improving his mpg by 50% and boosting his power significantly.

According to my friend the set-up on the car looks very professional, my friend trusts this guys intellect so doesn't believe he's wasted his good money on some sort of crack pot idea.

He's now in 100% belief this works, I'm 100% sure it don't, I've googled the company and had a nosy around the site, and I think its a big fat con, my friend and his relative seem to think its a revolution in engine technology and big changes are on the horizon.

I mean seriously, have I missed something?!

On a bit a googling, while it doesn't really say it doesn't work it does state they had no evidence to really show it does work.

If it were that simple those guys would be millionaires..... they look like they aren't

And the first error is in the first line:

"Hydrogen and Oxygen are generated, on demand, from water, using an electrolysis cell fitted to an alternator."

Is an inefficient system, more energy in than out. The tiny quantity of gas produced by your burning of fuel to produce power to drive an alternator to then convert water to hydrogen and oxygen is the first massive inefficiency....

What a load of Ed Balls.

3 years and they still haven't published data... what a bunch of sharks.

Just thought, surely this company are doing something illegal, charging people for an installation that doesn't actually do anything?

Basically, I think the idea is that it uses current from the alternator for electrolysis, to convert water (H2O) into hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The hydrogen and oxygen are then burnt along with petrol/diesel, effectively making a hybrid.

In reality I don't think it would be able to produce hydrogen fast enough to make a noticeable difference. So in other words, a load of bks just like every other 'genius' invention that people create to 'improve fuel efficiency'.

Are you sure he didn't mean water injection?

I don't know a lot about it but from what I gather it injects a small amount of water into the cylinders / inlet to make the air denser to aid burning.

(I maybe well off the pace here though)

Cheers Egg chaser, That's how I imagined it would "work", and said to my friend at the time the system would take too much energy to actually save energy..if that makes sense.

Unfortunately he's now considering getting this done , I've been begging him all day not to!

Or ask him to google it first so he buys the best system along with the keywords "ASA" or "con"

Close, water injection is used to lower the temperatures in the combustion chambers to avoid detonation (ignition before intended). It's mostly used turbocharged/supercharged cars so they can run higher boost pressures and therefore higher compression ratios without detonation.

Its not that I think it works, not in the slightest, Iv'e researched this many a time in the past, I think the doubt came from wanting and hoping it to work, wouldn't we all want this?

I mean say tomorrow a company announces new technology that reduces our fuel bills by 50%, and it actually really works, and is proven so, are you saying the people who believe it to be true would be lacking in the IQ department?
