its time ive got a xr4i 2.8 engine and im wanting to do it up my s3 as 129000 on the clock so what can we do with it more power bigger pistons etc anyone done it any ideas

Going from your 2.9 back to a 2.8 you'll lose about 20bhp straight away ?

I agree with phillpot. if you have the funds what about a turbo conversion + brakes + gearbox + lsd why not just have the 2.9 rebuilt ?

Get it tuned and on a rolling road first to see what you have already got.

How much of a power increase are you aiming for? I assume you're up for doing the work yourself and know what you're doing. Are the suspension/transmission/brakes all reasonably fresh, or is everything still original?

On my recent top end rebuild, I ported and polished the exhaust ports and took 20 thou off of the heads. I can feel the difference, it feels more responsive low down in the rev range. I have a mate close by that has a twin turbo 2.9 in a mondeo based race car breathing through a couple of carbs. He seems to know his stuff, his advice was to let the engine breathe, I can feel the compression when I lift off the gas too I`m happy so far, next is a different cam and maybe some different injectors
