On going problems with my car purchased from a garage

Hi folks,

I was just after a bit of advice really. A month ago I bought (yes bought, not fking brought) a 2001 Vw Lupo 1.4 100hp sport, as I lost my job and needed a stop gap car and being young, I didn't fancy paying ££££ on insurance.

Now this week I have had the gearbox replaced with a recon unit and was told the clutch was on it's last legs, so I had that replaced as well. But now, when the car is in gear and no matter if I am changing up or down, the clutch will make a slight grinding noise. This problem cannot be felt through the gearstick or through the clutch. But there is definitely a noise there which wasn't there before. Could anyone hazard a guess at what it could be, before I go back to the garage? My thoughts is on it being the clutch release bearing, but then the clutch won't make the noise if the car is idiling and I lift the clutch up..

Did you take the lupo back to the garage you bought it from to try and fix it (yes only retards say brought in place of bought, much like schtrong schweet etc etc)?

If you didn't give them the chance to fix it and you paid someone else to do it you are very unlikely to get anything back. Probably not what you want to hear but that is the way it works.

How do you know the garage you took it to for repairs didn't take advantage of you?

The car went back to the garage I bought the car from, as I have a 3 month warranty. I will be going back on Monday morning to sort this out once and for all, it is just so annoying.

If it's only a slight bearing noise when the clutch is pushed in I wouldn't worry too much unless it gets worse.

Sounds like the clutch and gearbox might be "bedding in" - as long as there is no grinding/crunching/juddering (Unless I've been lied to by a mechanic......... ). I'd be concerned about only getting a recon unit though by the dealer!

...its a 10 year old car.It is quite common to replace a major component on a car of this age with a reconditioned unit.A new gearbox would cost more than the value of a 10 yr old Lupo.

I have changed many clutches and always used the correct methods - some make a noise - annoyingly mine makes a squeak & has done for years.

Worth checking out but probably nothing to worry about.

what part of a gearbox beds in when the clutch is down?

take it back , its not your problem what part is causing , let them sort it

does the box look fresh or is a grubby second hand one

I have no idea I was told that a new gearbox might whine/make a few noises a bit when first fitted by a mechanic mate of mine (but he's a tendancy to be economical with the truth so that's why I added the caveat!).
