Stupid question?
Discussion
Hi chaps,
I'm looking to build a car from the ground up fairly soonish (this coming Winter really). I just have a few questions regarding the registration of the vehicle.
I'll be building the car using my own chassis and a Ford '32 Pick Up style body, as well as other parts off other cars. I've looked through IVA regulations and this means it'll be tested as an "Amateur Built Vehicle" and probably registered on a Q plate, assuming my sources are up to date. My questions are thus:
1. What would it be registered as? Do I get to choose a name or will it just be "Kitcar" on the V5?
2. Regarding the quote below, do I just make up a VIN? I presumed before reading this that it was something provided by VOSA/DVLA after the IVA test had been passed.
Thanks in advance,
Adam.

IVA guidelines said:
The examination of a vehicle may be refused for any of the following reasons

Any help would be greatly appreciated. There are plenty of ways around doing an IVA test for a home built car of this style, but I'd far sooner do it legitimately as it'll be my daily driver for a short while after the build is completed (whilst my other car is restored).-snip-
- the vehicle does not display, permanently, in an accessible position and readily legible, the required stamped-in vehicle identification number
Thanks in advance,
Adam.
i am building a cobra with a bought cobra body and a chassis i have built. dvla require for chassis that you have a chassis blueprint or paper with your drawing of chassis to show its your design and some thought has gone into it, 2, you need receipts for the steel bought to built the chassis.
when you are rolling chassis stage with body fitted and mot not far away you send in a letter to dvla telling them what you have built and that you require a chassis number. by return they might request more info or inspection then they will issue a dvla chassis number.
you can name your vehicle what you want.
i have used donor parts from a jag and have the v5 if you use enough donor parts to add up to the required amount then you will get an age related plate to your donor, if not you are looking at a Q plate

You can make up your own VIN as long as it has 17 characters. Many kit manufacturers still do their own using a combination of the kit name and seemingly random digits despite the fact they can apply for their own specific VIN code sequence.
Even though you can do it yourself it may be safer to get DVLA to assign you one starting something like SABTVR.
