Road tax in Ireland :O

I red about A3 that someone bought and described in readers cars and mentioned something about road tax . I found the rates :

It`d cost me 5694euros which is just over 5k a year in road tax alone :O

And I was complaining about tax that i have to pay for my cars ...

Good grief... So the gentleman who came across from Ireland to buy my 156 V6 is paying 935 Euros a year in road tax. Wow, that is extortionate.

I live here in Ireland, road tax is shocking expensive!

E582 for my e36 318is and E333 for my 1.4 golf.

so my grand total for road tax is E915!!!

Dont think i'll ever own a big engine car as long as i live in this country,
I have to have a V8 in my life at some stage and if that means moving then so be it!

I hear rumours that they might be putting it up again....*goes off to look at motorbikes......

Out of all the places I have been in the world Ireland remains the most expensive and for that I will never ever return.

Just like to add that we have to pay tolls on roads as well!

nearly every new motorway has toll booths on them, so if I drove from Dublin to Galway I would have to pay 2 may be 3 tolls depending what roads I took plus return journey making it 4-6 different tolls @ E1.90 to E2.30 per toll (more for commercial vehicles),
plus fuels getting expensive average of E1.50L for unleaded and E1.48 for diseasel.

Getting expensive running cars in ireland these days....

You could if you didn't live here.
If you reside in Ireland for more than 6 months (i think?) of the year or are a citizen of Ireland it is against the law to drive a vehicle not registered in this country!


The customs/garda are strict on UK/NI plate cars.
If they see the same UK/NI plate car going about it will be stopped and questioned.

They'll take the car off you and fine you a percentage of the cars value plus you'll still have to pay VRT if caught illegally driving a "foreign" vehicle.

That might work but the customs will watch you like a hawk!

They have been known to watch certain areas to gather intelligence, I've seen them hanging about watching houses that have UK/NI plate cars so when the owners are questioned they have enough evidence to do them for tax evasion,
I live in the border counties, customs are every where and know every trick in the book.

Make no mistake, this is what the future holds for us in the UK. If, as look's likely, it becomes politically problematic to hike fuel duty further to help nudge us all into lower CO2 cars, and meet our national climate obligations then it will be higher road tax duty.

My uncle got away with a UK reg'd Pajero for a good few years as he bought and sold property in the UK but he was eventually pulled and told to VRT it (No fine though)

I take it your uncle had a UK licence?

I did once upon a time, until i was threatened by a garda with court if I didn't change it, was a UK euro licence as well.....feckers!!
