I have become a little intrigued with these watches, and have heard some good things said about them.

Any owners care to comment on the quality etc? Where is a reputable place to buy 'em from?

Dunno about purchase but my dad bought one in the 1970s and it died in 200X (no service in the time of ownership). So they're pretty good. Source? No idea.

As you can see I have one of their dress watches bought via Amazon UK from a US company. Dial/watch punches above its cost but must admit the bracelet (that is not changeable due to the lugs) is on the light side compared to my Seiko

I recently bought this from http://www.seiyajapan.com/ for < £300. Feels like a good quality item even if I had paid RRP, which I think was the equivalent of ~£500. Service from Seiya was excellent & delivery prompt.
Also try http://c-watch.co.jp/ww/ or creation watches.
Do a search for Orient, there's plenty of info out there.:

The power reserve is very well regarded.

The Orient Mako is the Seiko Monster of watch collecting on the US based watch forums. Everyone over there seems to have one.
