Either OPC or otherwise?

I've just bought a GT3, and have the dilemma of putting an OPC warranty on the car (at great cost!) or a non dealer one which seems good at half the price, no 111 point inspection needed, but only has £5k claim limits. This will be fine for the majority of stuff but obviously not an engine or gearbox pop.

So just wondering what other people have, to help me decide!

Thing is i'm new to Porsche and not sure what potential reliability issues are out there.

Thanks smile

Are you sure the cheap one will cover the car as well as the OPC warranty? Aside from people like Hartech and Malton, what warranty is worth having on these cars, other than OPC?

I have recently sold my 2008 gt3 and I had put opc warranty on for two years when the original warranty expired.
I build engines for a living and get to deal with some of the over policies.
No brainer opc all day seems a lot of cash but wait until the RMS leaks and the other people say it's not mechanical failure but wear and tear. Opc collected my car, gave me a loan car, removed box, fitted seal and then removed it again 4 weeks later to check a dye they had sprayed on rear of block to see if problem was fixed.
All foc.
I kow I would have been in trouble with many of the other policies.

Opc all day.

Mine had one of those faults that was impossible to trace. Warranty kept looking and eventually found it to be the ECU, which was replaced gratis. You need to buy the recovery ( Porsche Assist ) as well seperately. I've it on my 04 Cayenne S as well.

I bought my 997.1 GT3 last September and tbh would not have considered one without an OPC warranty.
Depends on your attitude to risk but the downside could be incredubly expensive.

Ok thanks all, good points and seems like a good general consenus!

I don't mind the cost of OPS as long as I can see some value in it, and I do like to err on the side of conservative!

Only issue with OPS is you have to own the car for 3 months before applying it now, so you are left in a bit of limbo there...

Look... Its really simple.

If your car is totally Porsche factory standard, get the OPC warranty. It really is the only no quibble guarantee on these cars.

I would still have one on my 6`GT3, had they not imposed the ban on non-original `bits and bobs` and upped the cost so much a couple of years ago.

Under my original warranty they were fantastic!

Just make sure your air freshener is the correct Porsche one and not Magic Tree! rolleyes

OPC All the way. Mine has a copy invoice from a RMS replacement earlier in the year under warranty - 5000.00

I would be in a right mess if I had to fork that out in one go! Its 1200.00 a year. Its a no brianer !

Ok, i'm there smile

Going to pop to my OPC and have a chat.

This RMS issue... do you spot it from actual oil drops on the ground? I looked under the car and all looks shiny, apart from one part which is a little sooty.

I thought the GT3 block didn't suffer from RMS! Oh well... that's pretty poor show for a car, which at the time, was presumably only a couple of years old.

There doesnt need to be much wrong with your car to reach a grand for a repair. The warranty is peace of mind if the engine or gearbox goes pop, all the other parts that are covered are a bonus IMO.
I guess it would be the thick end of £30k for an OPC to replace the engine in a GT2 but even if it's less than half of that for an independent repair it's still going to smart a bit when you get handed the bill. Do I think my engine is going to go pop? not really, but st happens and like all insurances its a gamble and a worthwhile one IMO.

Not just RMS, mine had a FMS done under warranty a few months back.

OPC had my car for over a week, gave me a cayenne to burn around in, fixed the following:

-Front main seal leak
-Bonnet wasn't closing properly, now better than new
-Steering wheel trip was loose, fixed it for me
-Seatbelt wasn't recoiling well enough, ordered me a new one, yet to go in and get it fitted
-Had a random squeeling/screeching noise from the engine at 3000rpm +- 200rpm, fixed that for me also

All under warranty, cost me nothing.

Now the PCM is playing up, so probably need to get that replaced. As is one of the door handles on the inside, the window isn't closing immediately when you close the door (as in the little bit it goes up to create a seal when you close the door). It's a 997 at the end of the day, same parts as a Carerra for the electronics/trim on the whole, so won't be any more reliable. Maybe less reliable as it gets bashed around more from the hard suspension.

I've taken the car around tracks this/last year, driven it about 8,000 miles, used it nearly every day, and it's been solid although like any car has had a few niggles. The OPC warranty means you get a good service, and Porsche assistance also works in your favour when something goes wrong. Yes you need to keep the car standard and looked after by Porsche, but to be honest a 997 GT3 is perfect standard, you don't need an exhaust or better brakes like on a carerra etc... so just keep it standard and peace of mind from OPC warranty in my view. Yes maybe in one year you don't use it at all, but one big bill it'll pay for itself over 5 years...

Same for me, wouldn't consider one without. It payed off, after 2000 Miles it developed a creak from the front end and I had top mounts and control arms replaced under warrenty.

I'd love a akrapovic system for it (and some other bits and pieces) but I really value the warrenty on this one!

Two other big pluses with regards to OPC warranty.

1) It's transferrable to a new owner on a private sale and since it's a fixed cost (+ inspection charge) it's a cost you will probably see back in increased interest/premium over other private sales come resale

2) An OPC warranty is Porsche giving your car their stamp of approval. Anyone who is familiar with it and knows of its strictness (and the associated 111-point inspection) can have absolute peace of mind when it comes to evaluating whether your car is a comfortable purchase for them.

Long story short I think it's the sort of thing that whilst it has the appearance of being expensive, actually adds value to your car and at the very least you should see the money you spend back in higher resale.

I dont have the OPC warranty on mine as I have radiator grills fitted. If the car was standard then I would have the warranty for piece of mind.
