B-17 "Liberty Belle" (the one that visited the UK and flew at Duxford's Flying Legends show in 2008) has crashed and burned in the USA:

Reportedly all 7 on board got out and are safe.

Oh that is incredibly sad. Pleased that all on board are safe, but seeing that wonderfull bird on fire is very depressing. No restoration for her. There will be a lot of people with connections to her feeling bitterly sad tonight.

Hope the insurance doesnt sky rocket forcing others to stay on the ground.

very bad news, glad all were OK though.

excuse my brashness, but the photo of it burnt out looks exactly like my airfix one did after I set fire to it as a lad, how spooky

Very strange, looks like a forced landing by the marks in the field, most unusual on a four engined bird like a 17...

I too was wondering what brought them down; multiple engine failure/fuel system/on-board fire? The fire either started after they got out or was survivable at that time.

I expect we will find out soon enough.

In-flight uncontrolled engine fire, the crew did the right thing and put it in the first available field, got out and ran away. Everybody survived, which in the circumstances is as good as it gets.

A really sad sight. Glad everyone got out ok, but they must be gutted after all the hard work to restore her. She looked fab at Flying Legends the other year.

Sad end to an historic aircraft, better than the breakers mind.

However "The plane was one of around 11 B-17s still flying and regularly appeared at fly pasts and other ceremonial events." she wasn't the last so the line can still go on.

She was a looker wasn't she....every time we lose a warbird a part of me says 'enough, ground em all' but it's far better they continue to fly and losing one every now and again is the price to be paid, thank god they all walked away

Everyone said it crashed but it appears to have made a controlled landing as in one of the early pics it was on its wheels. Also if it had crashed you would have expected to see debris in the path of the crash.

It’s a real shame as it’s was a wonderful plane

Looks like some pics taken by the crew here just after they got out. Shows it on it's wheels on fire.

Very sad.
