Love the Mash article - it's funny on so many different levels. In my ignorance, I was staggered to learn of the wealth of the unions; a relevant example being that Unison owns the lion's share of beachside property in Croyde, Devon. I wonder who gets the most from that guaranteed source of perks? And is it all declared to HMRC?

Imagine my horror when I arrived at our holiday chalet in Croyde the other year to find it was a Unison site. I refused to buy any food or drink on-site and even walked into town to buy my paper from the local shop!
Were you in the challets or cottages?
Nicely run site anyway and very friendly staff, but I did wonder whether I'd be lynched if my identity as an "evil mill owner" was blown.
Fortunately, we found plenty of decent eateries in the surrounding area and villages.

We were in the chalets. To be fair, for the money, they were excellent. Very clean and comfortable and a definite step up from the static caravans down the road at Ruda which were about the same price.Nicely run site anyway and very friendly staff, but I did wonder whether I'd be lynched if my identity as an "evil mill owner" was blown.

Having said that, I still insisted we went back to the caravans when we went again last month. I've got principles!

Managed to crack my ribs on the surfboard. My BIL lives in Croyde, is a keen surfer and 'convinced' me to try to learn to surf in Croyde bay. Apparently, this isn't the best place for novices.

What if they all go on strike and no-one cares?
A danger of highlighting how useless many of their jobs are to the nation I would have thought.
Are they not already on strike? A danger of highlighting how useless many of their jobs are to the nation I would have thought.

I mean, I've tried to 'phone a contact at the local Highways office this morning, not when I got to work (I'm not daft) but after 930 and there was no answer at all. I'm not talking about some vague, nebulous backwater of the public sector here, I'm talking about a very tangible frontline part of it.
Sadly for them, that no one cares or notices is a very distinct possibility.

We stayed in the (excellent and, most importantly, dog friendly 'cottages' (read terraced bungalows).

It's a nice part of the world - we try and get down there a couple of times a year for a long weekend. Cheap as chips if you can fill a caravan with mates as well. Never tried the surfing myself although I might have gone for an evening swim after a few too many beers. Christ, it was cold!Managed to crack my ribs on the surfboard. Used to be Hawks, Harriers and Tornados based at Chivenor that used the bay as a waypoint. Happy days

I knew there was a reason I didn't join Unison...
You can hardly blame some people for being disgruntled though, especially if they've invested a great deal of their life/finances then somebody changes the terms of the agreement.
Direct comparisons with the private sector are hardly fair either...

king tastic. This was the catalyst for public sector reform 30 odd years ago, lets hope it all happens again.
