Autobahn selling 997's
Discussion
www.autobahn.co.uk/ are quoting Sept-Dec 2004 for 997 orders placed now - seems a bit unrealistic to me that I could go in tomorrow and order a 997 for delivery before the end of the year. What do you reckon?
Also, anyone ordered a NEW car from them? Any real pitfall vs going to an OPC?
PS. they're also advertising 987 Boxster's as well, full list:
BRAND NEW PORSCHE CARS AVAILABLE TO YOUR SPEC
ORDERS NOW BEING TAKEN FOR:
997 Carrera 2 and Carrera 2S Sept - Dec 2004
Cayenne 3.2 / S / Turbo Models Sep - Dec 2004
996 Turbo Coupe / Cabrio / S Sept - Dec 2004
996 C4 / C4S / Coupe / Cabrio June 2004 onwards
987 New Generation Boxster January 2005 onwards

Hi Neil
Thanks for mentioning us. We've been dealing with new Porsches for a few years now; GT Purely Porsche did an expose few months back revealing all!
Avoiding the OPC network and their long waits doesn't have any drawbacks as new Porsches are supplied with a two year warrenty from new irrespective etc.
While we're on, we have some really special 911 3.2s and 993s too. Are we allowed to suggest you take a look at the website again ... www.autobahn.co.uk Thank you!

Will they be C16 cars, ie cars that are intended to be destined for the UK?
If they are parallel imports (non C16, like the Porsches at Ian Forster Specialist Cars) then you might want to consider if re-sale value will be affected or not. This is a contentious issue and I'm not giving my opinion either way.

Hi JS
Thanks for the query.
I trust it is OK to respond.
We agree, it is indeed a contentious issue and re-sale values may well be adversely affected. However, we would contend, as would other parallel importers, that this suits the Official importer very well but for no good reason.
Time was when the spectre of a Porsche crashed/burned at 160 mph on the German auto route would find its way into the UK market. Scary. Warranties would not be upheld (the 2nd year warranty was a UK market-only application) and other stuff meant that anything less than a Porsche from the official network was a rogue.
However today, for ease of production, factory specs are similar world wide, certainly for Europe, lhd/rhd excepted of course. Moreover, late EEC legislation pretty much prevents restrictive practices which make it illegal for the manufacture or their agents indeed, to act prejudicially and not offer the normal facilities because one car was not purchased from that dealer, or that country or region at least.
This is a fact readily acknowledged by Mr Goss and the UK Porsche importers today, and most of their dealers will also trade in non-official supplier cars, so no problems there now. We’ll happily value a non-C16 car just the same as a C16, something Autobahn also has been doing for a long time. Every car we have is valued on it’s own merits as best as we can see.
Our new Porsches are equivalent UK specs – we’re sure you’ll understand that we’ll protect our sources by not directly naming them (there are several) as some time and investment has been put into the situation, whereby we can have a brand new identical UK-spec Porsche complete with 2 year warranty covers from date of registration to the first named (UK) owner, sitting here ready to go. Or place forward orders on the new model 997 even. Just as we have been doing for 5 or 6 years now.
Causes of adversely effecting used Porsche residuals were ‘thin’, and are pretty non-existent now. And if that means we can sell to those not wishing to wait the long wait via the official network, then that’s an advantage for us and our valued clients to enjoy.

Thanks john m,
You made some good points and I'm sure you will get stacks of business getting people their 997s earlier than than they would if they ordered from an OPC.
Mind you, I wouldn't like to think what an OPC would say about a non-C16 car if you wanted to trade it in. I bet they would be more blikered than yourselves on the issue of C16 status. I would also bet that most private buyers won't be too bothered about the C16 thing. Most of the folks smoking 'round in new Porsches where I live probably don't know what C16 means. Most are posers that know nowt about cars I reckon.
