Back on topic - I think it's a good idea, for Audi as well.
Even numbers for 4-doors/saloons, odd numbers for 2-doors/coupes. Audi just f*ck it up by adding a 4-door A5/S5.
At the moment a 330d could be one of 4 cars (Saloon/Estate/Coupe/Conv), one of 8 cars if you include MSport. To differentiate, especially as even with the current 3-series, the coupe looks very different from the saloon, is a good thing. It will also give the flexibility to make the 4-series (3-series coupe) even more different.
It's not an unusual concept, the 6-series has always been a coupe version of the 5-series - and all the better for not being a 5-series coupe.
Merc have the same problem. What's an E350? Could be a saloon, or an estate. Could also be a c-class based coupe, or a c-class based convertible. Talk about brand confusion.

Under the skin, perhaps. But not in the same was as the 3 series saloon/coupe. Taking that ethos down to the 3 (and making the coupe the 4) gives scope for a more bespoke car and hopefully a more driver centric one.
Can't really be anything other than a good thing??
