My son will be 10 at the end of July and I think a watch would be a great present - it would be his first watch.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'd probably want to spend £20-40, not because I'm a tight-wad, but simply it's likely to get lost or broken.

Pick up a Seiko 5 for that if you are looking for a proper watch.

Or if you are looking for something more youthful then maybe a Swatch Forest Path?

Tell him he's got forty quid to spend on a watch, and to go find one he likes?

He's not really around much to go shopping - school keeps him pretty occupied.

Just had a quick look around and picked a few below, I reckon it's important to know whether he wants an analog or digital watch and move on from there...

I'm surprised casio dont do more in this area - my son would love a GShock but (at 10) even the smallest are too big. The Baby G too girly.

I'd have thought something small but tough looking in the £20-50 range would do great with the kids?

Midsize Seiko Diver, almost indestructable and very very cool

you can pick up a nice refurb for £50-60 that will last him years.

You can not image how much it means for a little lad to have an identical watch to his dad, we always wear ours when out together either down on the beach fishing/canoeing or just shopping with mum.

That looks nice - not sure where I'd get him a refurb though.

I wear a Breguet as my daily. He ain't getting one of those!

Thanks for all the suggestions, very helpful.

Neil, go swatch!

Good quality, very cool stuff and you'll easily find something that suits him well.

Mind you, that Adiddas one above is rather cool!

Yes I think swatch is the way to go - particularly as he'd want an analogue watch.

I'm wondering about face size, he's a tall ten year old, but I wouldn't want an adult sized watch on him, it would look silly.

The Swatch I selected is 34mm, I think you will find a lot of swatches due to being unisex have a small diameter.

You may want to look into getting a different strap instead of the standard @jelly@ ones. Something like Velcro strap or a NATO strap.
