alternatives too having a key made by main dealer?

want a spare key done for a vauxhall as only have the one but they want over 200 pounds for this is there anyway round this. 150 for key then 50 to program it apparently.

When I had my Focus I bought a new (genuine) Ford key with a blank blade off eBay for about £30 and got Timpsons to cut it for a fiver. I then paid my local Ford stealer £40 to code the key to the car.

Saved around £100!

places like timpsons can duplicate some keys - not all and not some of the newer models, but worth a try first

Lots of cobblers ( shoe repairers ) offer this service. Was at one the other day and they claimed to do the lot for £99

IIRC, most cars made before 1998 should be fairly simple to sort out, I believe that is when coded keys became mainstream along with decent immobilisers. Certainly, the key for my 1998 Mazda wasn't coded! If they car is old and you can find a blank key getting one cut cheaply should be easy enough.

Later than that and your best option is to get a blank, get it cut and recoded at an auto electricians or independant specialists.

its a 2003 vx220 so not sure where that leaves me, went on timpsons website but been told they cant do these ones but need to check. perhaps try an auto electrician near me.

try a proper locksmith,the one i used could program them as well

yes, I'd try and exhaust all options before going to the main dealer. Hopefully the VX220 will use a common part (something like an Astra key and barrel would be ideal!) so you won't get rinsed trying to track down a spare key.

I should heed my own advice, I do want a spare key for my Volvo!
