just gone half a mile and overheated, neighbour pointed out trail of water pulling into my house( after the temp gauge hit 95c!) cooled down and refilled tank(pre serp)and vent air from system then let warm up, ive got hot water going into the header/swirl tank but tank stays cold untill the preesure spurts the cold water out via the cap, i have seen copper flakes come out of the tank when topping up has the temp switch gone on the bottom of the tank? any info much appreciated!!!

If you can see copper particles in the coolant, sounds like the radiator core may have failed. How old is the rad and what condition is it in?

oh bugg.r had a small leak some where for a while never could find it as no leak when hot only a tiny pool on the floor after left after a couple of hours.. there was a big flake of copper which i managed to scoop up which was very britell, the radiator was making a hell of a noise when i poped the bonnet but i put this down to air in the system? or has it just collapsed under the heat??? and wher has the copper come from copper doesn't melt at 95c???

Not necessarily melted, however if the core has corroded it may have broken up and clogged the cooling system. In the past I have used an adapter on top of the swirl pot to pressurise the system with a bike pump, this then allows you to have a good look at the entire system without the manic noise and heat from having the engine running.

That blocked off pipe (that used to feed the throttle warmer) on top of the inlet manifold is your friend.. Not as gimicky as a special funky cap of course, but if you just want to pressurize the cooling system...
