Thought I would post a few pics as I was sitting about 10 meters from the crash!

We rent a house on the road from mulsanne corner to indianapolis each year, the garden backs onto the straight.

I was sitting there with a friend when the Audi crashed. It clipped the other car it headed straight towards us. Luckily nothing hit us but there was debris all around including some pretty heavy pieces that could have done some serious damage. We where pretty shaken up but glad that the driver was ok and we didn't have pieces of car stuck in us! I picked up some pretty cool souvenirs too wink

Amazing stuff, thanks for posting the pics. Sobering viewing after getting next to the armco on night ops over the last few years.

That must have shocked you being so close!

BTW - apparently there was no contact with the Ferrari, although it had squeezed Rocky onto the grass which is why he lost control.

Check out the first comment on that story:

"proves that something is working right in the saftey department, very lucky to be walking away from this accident, second why the hell are they racing in the dark at 200mph."

We where pretty shaken up to say the least! It all happened so quickly - looking at the Audi flashing its lights and being squeezed off the road, you could tell something bad was about to happen. Its interesting how you react in a situation like that. (rabbit in the headlights!) My friend had the good sense to shield his eyes - I just looked on in amazement at what was happening not bracing myself at all. I think we where very lucky not to have been injured/dead..

Hey Mark - did the ping pong ball come from the Audi too? Jamie knows all too well the origin of that item !!!!!! Tee hee.
For those of you who think there was no contact between the Audi and the Ferrari, that is not what the Radio Le Mans pit reporter said. He went up to the Ferrari's pit later in the race and said that there was moderate to heavy damage to the right hand side of that car.
A terrifying incident, but thank God it wasn't serious for any of those concerned.
Absolutely BRILLIANT race though this year.

Audi wins from Peugeot(Un)Sport(ing) Team.

Wow. On the aerial shots I could see a light in the trees and "black ops" crossed me mind. I didn't realise the houses backed right onto the straight! I thought it was just trees.

No fire, but some of the bits I picked up did smell of Diesel.

Perhaps the sight of Jamie with ping pong ball and "beads" caused the crash?!.. wink hehe

Also, if there was no contact, what caused the tail of the Audi to swing out and point the nose towards the crash barriers?

Thats odd, I'm sure there was coverage from that pit garage showing an unmarked front right corner to that Ferrari. I'm still not sure there was contact, getting two wheels on the loose stuff outside the black stuff at that kind of speed would easily send you around.

I would like to see a picture of what was left of the car, but there don't seem to be any.

Just the tub/cockpit remained apparently.

The footage was never clear enough to make out the car.

Great the drivers can walk away from such massive accidents.

Just a thought

Great race and very very lucky.. I was at the fence when McNish hit the tyre wall..

If the Audi was passing the ferrari at 80/90+mph and so close to the side, surely the downforce on the rear would be in some kind of turbulance unsettling the car....
Saw the video and heard that the ferrari was untouched....

You should listen to MWM on RLM and join the forum. If you had done so this week you would have seen this photo linked:

As I said on the forum - 'That is a car?'

So glad to hear that Rocky is fine.
